A 79-year-old woman was hospitalized after being hit in the side by a stray bullet Monday afternoon, police said.
The woman was shot on 153rd Street and River Avenue in Melrose at around 4 p.m., officials said.
Authorities said she was taken to Lincoln Hospital, where she is in stable condition.
Investigators believe at least one suspect fled in a silver SUV but it is not clear what sparked the shooting.
People in the area said it made them concerned about the neighborhood's safety.
"This is ridiculous," said Viqui Pellot. "New York City is not getting better or anything."
