Burglars Dressed in Combat Suits, Masks, Assault Bronxville Homeowners in Overnight Break-in: Police

Burglars dressed in black combat suits and masks broke into a Bronxville home over the weekend and assaulted the homeowners before fleeing with valuables, police say.

Jenny Shivley and her husband were upstairs in the bedroom of their Summit Avenue home Saturday night when she work up to see two strange men standing over her husband, who was on his knees after being struck by them, she told NBC 4 New York.

She said it appears the burglars got in by forcing open a second-floor window and then into a closet in the master bedroom. Her husband was startled awake and one of the burglars ordered him to get down, said Jenny Shivley, and when he didn't get down fast enough, he was hit with a flashlight across the side of his head and knocked over.

"Normally when burglars are confronted, they run off," said Bronxville Police Chief Christoper Satriale. "The fact that they assaulted this one, we take very seriously."

The Shivleys have an alarm, but didn't set it Saturday night, she said. Police said the burglars may have been attempting to bypass first-floor alarms by entering through the second floor.

The burglars were dressed in combat suits, masks, elbow pads and knee pads. They got away with the Shivleys' wedding and engagement rings, cash and coins.

The break-in comes a week after a similar second-story job on Governor's Road. Police are asking homeowners in the areas to check home surveillance video for any suspicious activity.
