Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 30-year-old man whose body was found in a garbage bag on a boardwalk in the Rockaways after medical examiners found a gunshot wound to the man's chest, police say.

The body of 33-year-old Quynton Ross was discovered on the boardwalk at Beach 40th Street Monday morning, after family members went searching for him.

The man's grief-stricken aunt told NBC 4 New York the family reported his disappearance over the weekend to police but couldn't wait the 24 hours for authorities to begin searching. They downloaded an app that would ping his cellphone and it led them to the man's body.

The man's mother "came out early this morning and started searching, she and my brother," said Stachia Jacobs. "They found the bag with his stuff inside."

"Mother's instinct made her open that bag," said Jacobs. "She just was led to that bag."

Family members say the man is a father of a young girl.

Police say it's not clear how long the body had been there.

No arrests have been made.
