New Jersey Man Found Lying in Road After Hit-Run: Police

Police in New Jersey are searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck and left a 32-year-old man lying unconscious on the street in Bergenfield Thursday evening, authorities say.

Officers responded to a 911 call on Woodbine Street just before 8 p.m. and found a man lying in the northbound lane, according to Bergenfield police.

The victim, Brian Gilligan of Bergenfield, was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center where he's being treated for serious injuries.

Gilligan, who owns a commercial moving company called Ireland Movers, told NBC 4 New York from his hospital bed Friday that he was standing in the road to try to help his employee move a truck out from a nearby business when he was hit.

"I waved a flashlight and he didn't stop," Gilligan said of what he could remember. "I jumped to get out of the way and he hit me. I supposedly flipped around in the air and hit the ground, and I was unconscious for awhile."

Investigators say the vehicle continued north on Woodbine and fled.

Gilligan has several broken bones and is unable to move the left side of the body. His job requires him to be physically mobile to run the business, and he'll be sidelined for at least the near future due to several surgeries he has coming up.

"It's like my business is gone because of this," he said. "All he had to do was stop. I'm a forgiving person, but can't just do that."

"I can't wait until they catch him," he said of the driver. 'They will catch him."
