Sorry Beachgoers: NYC Closes City Beaches Monday Over Hermine

New York City says its beaches will be off-limits to swimming, bathing and surfing on Labor Day because of rip currents stemming from storm system Hermine.

City officials had initially instituted the beach water ban for Sunday, and said it could extend past Monday's holiday into Tuesday.

Authorities had been concerned Hermine would bring heavy rains, strong winds and flooding in some coastal areas. The storm had been a Category 1 hurricane but weakened.

Even as it moved away from the U.S. East Coast, officials said it still had enough strength to make waves and currents dangerous.
