4 Kids Among 6 Hurt by Electrical Shock on Amusement Park Ride

Four children ranging in age from 4 to 10 and two adults were injured by electric shock caused by a loose lighting wire on a Connecticut amusement park ride Tuesday, authorities said.

New London police responded to the Ocean Beach Park boardwalk just before 2 p.m. Monday after receiving reports of at least two people getting hurt on the Scrambler.

The operator of the Scrambler told police that he felt a 'tingling' sensation when he was pressing the button to bring the ride to the stop, police said.

All six people, who also said they felt 'tingling' on the ride, were transported to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital to be treated for minor injuries, police said. Hospital officials said on Wednesday that all six were released on Tuesday and did not have to stay overnight.

State police said a 4-year-old girl, a 7-year-old girl, two 10-year-old boys and 25-year-old Victor Williams, of Wauregan, were among the injured.

Police told NBC Connecticut one of the people transported was a boy who touched a metal fence as he was getting off the Scrambler and suffered minor burns.

On Wednesday, a source with the city told NBC Connecticut a loose lighting wire came into contact with the frame of the ride and sent a current through it. Water from recent rains might have contributed to the issue, the source said.

Later, state police said several electrical issues were discovered and detectives ordered all rides in the park to be shut down until the issues were fixed.

The Scrambler was built in 1965. It was inspected this past spring before the season started.

State police said a licensed electrician would make repairs and the ride would be reinspected.
