Four people were shot in separate incidents Saturday after gunfire broke out following a huge party near Rutgers University, police said.

The violence broke out around 1 a.m. following Rutgersfest at the Piscataway, N.J., campus. Some 40,000 people were in attendance at Rutgersfest, a series of concerts, police said.

Eleven people were arrested on charges ranging from disorderly conduct to assault, according to police sources.

At some point, altercations broke out and shots were fired.

Four people were shot and wounded in the unrelated melees, police said.

Police say the gunshot victims were not students but their identity is still unknown.
