New York architecture studio Axis Mundi designed the "Ark House," which is set into Montana's Western mountains. This home is designed to mesh seamlessly with its surroundings, 100 acres of preserved land overlooking Beaver Head National Forest with remarkable views of the Big Sky Mountain. Ark House is a long, barn-like structure bisected by an impressive, sixty-foot, 4,800 square-foot cantilevered observation deck fabricated from Corten steel and glass. The uppermost level holds the kitchen, dining and living areas, while three bedrooms reside on the ground floor. At one end of the envelope-like structure lies breathtaking mountain views, while the other overlooks the atrium's lily pond. This home uses nearly zero energy thanks to its high-performance design and geothermal heating and cooling systems. A model of sustainability, the Ark House makes a seamless transition between the home and the land. (via Dezeen).
