Severe Storms Dump Rain for 3rd Straight Day, Before We Finally See Some Sun

The unsettled weather pattern that spawned a tornado in New Jersey and triggered rare twister warnings for parts of New York City amid thundering downpours over the last two days continued for a third — and expected final —day Thursday, with several strong storms throughout the tri-state.

Mulitple counties in central and northern New Jersey had severe thunderstorm warnings and flash flood warnings issued throughout Thursday evening into night, with all expiring by 11 p.m.

There were reports of streets flooded over in multiple New Jersey counties, including Highway 22 being closed at different locations due to the water. Flooding also closed part of I-287 North in Basking Ridge. 

Richmond County in New York also had a flash flood warning.

Thursday was similar to Wednesday during the day, with primarily dry conditions until late afternoon. Clouds gave way to some sun mid-day, which helped destabilize the atmosphere and fuel some storms. A round of showers and thunderstorms arrived later in the afternoon and evening in Pennsylvania, which moved into western and central New Jersey.

Most storms did not become too severe throughout the evening, with isolated batches of thunderstorms and heavy rain. Most of the region saw ordinary downpours, but nothing to the degree of the past few days. Local flooding was likely a result of over-saturation from two days of heavy rain.

Most of the shower and storm activity is expected to dissapate in the overnight hours, paving the way for a mercifully gorgeous Friday with highs around 80 and mostly sunny skies breaking through the morning clouds. The sun will stick around for Saturday before damp weather returns Sunday afternoon, as some showers and thunderstorms develop.
