A company that specializes in peanut butter and granola substitutes for those with peanut allergies is expanding an earlier recall as more cases of E. coli infections have been reported.

The SoyNut Butter Company expanded the recall Tuesday to all its I.M. Healthy SoyNut Butters and Granola products. They were distributed to multiple states, including child care centers and schools, and were available both in stores and through mail order.

The Centers for Disease Control reported 16 E. coli cases in nine states as of Tuesday, four of them reported after the initial recall.

SoyNut Butter initiated that recall Friday for its healthy original creamy variety after consulting with the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control.

Of the 16 cases reported, eight resulted in hospitalizations and five diagnoses of hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.

Customers are advised to return their product to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. A customer help line can be reached at 1-800-288-1012.
