A zebra was shot and killed by its owner Wednesday after it escaped in Florida, sheriff's officials said.
The incident happened in the 6000 block of Iris Boulevard in Callahan, north of Jacksonville, according to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office.
The owner shot and killed the zebra after it became injured during its escape, sheriff's officials said. Neighbors told NBC affiliate station WTLV the animal came from the nearby Cottonwood Ranch.
The owner did not have a proper license to own the animal, WTLV reported.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating.
