Who Will Fill Gillibrand's Vacated Seat?

Poll: GOP's Tedisco leads in eastern NY congressional race

A new poll out today shows a veteran Republican state lawmaker leading his Democratic opponent in the race for the vacant 20th Congressional District seat.

A special election is being held March 31 for the seat.

According to a Siena College survey of registered voters, Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco of Schenectady leads Democrat Scott Murphy of Glens Falls, 46 percent to 34 percent. The two men are vying for the seat vacated when Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand left for the U.S. Senate.

Neither candidate is widely known in the district that sprawls from the mid Hudson Valley to the Adirondacks.

Tedisco has been in the Legislature for 27 years, while Murphy is venture capitalist who grew up in Missouri.

Republicans hold an enrollment edge in the district, but Gillibrand won the last two elections.
