Man, 26, Hit by Lightning Last Weekend in Hudson Valley Park Dies

Daniel Quirk, of Dutchess County, was standing near a tree that was hit by lightning last weekend

A 26-year-old Dutchess County man injured by lightning last weekend at a state park in the Hudson Valley has died.

State parks department spokesman Randy Simons says Daniel Quirk of Millbrook died Tuesday afternoon at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

Simons says lightning hit a tree near where Quirk was standing Sunday afternoon at Lake Taghkanic State Park in Ancram in Columbia County, 43 miles south of Albany.

Simons says the park's staff had started evacuating the beach around 2 p.m. as strong thunderstorms rolled through the mid-Hudson Valley. About 30 minutes later, Quick was knocked down by lightning that hit a tree in a parking lot near the beach.

Lifeguards resuscitated Quirk, who was initially taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital, then later transferred to Albany Med.
