Two people were killed in Bellmore Tuesday morning after a private garbage truck struck a Hyundai Accent, authorities said.
Witnesses tell Nassau County police that the Jamaica Ash garbage truck had a green light when it entered the intersection of Camp Avenue and Newbridge Road and collided with the car in the middle of the road.
"The crash was pretty loud it sounded like a almost an explosion," said Jeff Weinstein. "It was bad, very bad."
The impact of the collision was so severe that, the male driver of the Hyundai and the female front-seat passenger were killed. Both of the deceased were said to be in their late 20s. A 31-year-old woman in the back seat was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and is is expected to survive.
The garbage truck drove 2 blocks down the road before it came to a complete stop. Police say the crash is under investigation, but the driver of the truck will not face charges.. The truck driver was uninjured.
