Want to Get Away? You Can From LaGuardia in June

Southwest Airlines will fly from LGA to Chicago, Baltimore

June 28. That's the official start date for Southwest Airlines' move into LaGuardia Airport.

The no-frills budget airline will fly direct only to Chicago Midway and Baltimore/Washington but will offer connections to more than 45 destinations, the company announced.

Southwest's move directly into New York City was made possible by its November purchase of the assets of bankrupt ATA Airlines, including its LaGuardia landing slots. Until June 28, Southwest can land no closer to NYC than Long Island MacArthur Airport .

Southwest will fly five daily nonstop flights between Chicago Midway and LaGuardia, and three daily nonstop between Baltimore/Washington and LaGuardia, the company said.

The airline's kickoff deal will offer fares from $89 for a one-way for a flight to Chicago and $49 one-way for Baltimore/Washington. The deal is not good on Fridays or Sundays (or July 2-6) and you must purchase by April 20.

"New York City has always and will continue to succeed because we offer the people who come here for business or vacations things they just can't get anywhere else," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a Southwest statement announcing the service. "As families and businesses weigh every travel decision carefully, Southwest's arrival at LaGuardia isn't just a boon for New Yorkers. It makes it a lot easier for people around the country to access New York 's unparalleled ideas, energy, and entrepreneurism."
