Westbound express lanes on Interstate 78 were closed at Exit 51 in Union Township around 3 p.m., according to the state's Department of Transportation.
As of around 6 p.m., all express lanes were closed, with only left local lanes open as state troopers investigated a crash that involved three tractor trailers and a taxi, according to New Jersey state police.
It wasn't immediately clear how many people were involved in the crash, but state police said no one suffered life-threatening injuries.
Twitter video shared with News 4 showed an overturned trailer and another vehicle on fire a short distance away.
The transportation agency encouraged drivers to plan alternate travel routes.
