One Week Left to Visit Jean-Michel Basquiat Exhibit in NYC

What to Know

  • There is an extensive Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibit at the Brant Foundation in East Village
  • The exhibit closes on May 15
  • Though the free advance tickets are sold out, all are welcome to try and do a walk-in

An exhibition featuring works by artist Jean-Michel Basquiat is open for one more week at the heart of a neighborhood he used to frequent.

The Brant Foundation is showing its inaugural exhibition in New York City, “Jean-Michel Basquiat," through May 15 in the East Village.

The expansive exhibit focuses on Basquiat’s brief, yet prolific life as an artist.

Born in 1960, many of his most influential works were created in the 1980s, while racial and political tensions were high in the U.S. Basquiat passed away on August 12, 1988 at age 27 after overdosing on heroin in his East Village studio.

“Basquiat’s complex oeuvre has established him as one of the most important innovators in modern art, even thirty years after his death,” The Brant Foundation said in a statement.

The themes of his paintings, which depict the collision between language, art, poetry and music, still remain relevant today. Visitors can find find his "keen thoughts and observations on canvas" throughout the multi-floor exhibition, according to The Brant Foundation.

“Jean-Michel Basquiat” is organized in collaboration with the Fondation Louis Vuitton and curated by Dr. Dieter Buchhart. The last day to see the exhibit is May 15, 2019 at The Brant Foundation located at 421 East 6th Street.
