A 17-year-old boy brought an unloaded gun to his downtown Brooklyn high school Thursday as students returned to classes for the first day of the 2017-18 academic year, police and school officials said.
The NYPD was called to City Polytechnic High School after the gun was found during a routine scan, a City Department of Education spokeswoman said Thursday.
She added that students and school staffers are safe and the campus -- which also includes George Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High School -- are safe.
"Safety always comes first," the spokeswoman said, noting that the 2016-17 academic year on record in New York City.
Police said the student was taken into custody afterward.
