A former NYPD officer accused of faking a mental disability to get more than $200,000 in Social Security benefits has been convicted of grand larceny.
The New York Times reports a state Supreme Court jury found 56-year-old Kevin Hurley guilty on Wednesday.
The Windsor man has said that he was unable to drive, manage money or shop due to depression and panic attacks.
Prosecutors say he paid his bills on time, drove his car more than 25,000 miles a year and made hundreds of purchases at stores and restaurants.
Hurley's lawyer, Joseph Murray, says his client forced himself to leave the house.
More than 100 officers and firefighters have pleaded guilty in the scheme, including four ringleaders who've said they helped them fake post-traumatic stress symptoms.
