A police pursuit through multiple New Jersey counties ended with a man sitting against a highway median, surrounded by state troopers Thursday following a possible diabetic emergency, footage from Chopper 4 showed.
Someone called 911 around 10:45 a.m. to report an SUV driving erratically on the northbound Garden State Parkway in Cranford, authorities say. State troopers repeatedly tried to get the driver to stop. The pursuit continued for about 10 miles before ending in East Orange, where state police say the driver hit a barrier a few times and may have gotten two flat tires.
Chopper 4 captured the end of the chase. State police vehicles were seen blocking off the front and back of a black SUV. A half-dozen troopers surrounded a man in a white T-shirt who was sitting against the highway median. An ambulance later took him away. The man was not seen in handcuffs.
Authorities say the 68-year-old driver may have suffered a diabetic episode. His name has not been released. Police say they don't expect to give him a summons, but the case remains under investigation.
No other vehicles were involved and no injuries to anyone but the driver, who appeared to be OK as he was taken away, were reported.
It wasn't the only apparently medical-induced wreck in New Jersey Thursday. About three hours before the Garden State Parkway chase, a tanker truck carrying flour flipped over on southbound I-287 in Edison, causing a six-vehicle crash. The driver of the tanker and one of the other drivers were taken to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries. State police say they believe the tanker truck driver suffered some sort of medical episode.
That investigation is ongoing as well.
