Snow turned to rain around the tri-state on Saturday and the wintry mix will continue to fall through the night -- but Sunday promises to be sunny, dry and near 40 degrees.
A light snow that began overnight quickly changed to sleet and rain in coastal New Jersey, Long Island and the city by morning. Accumulation of snow will be small, about 1 inch. In northern suburbs accumulation could be around 2-3 inches.
Sunday brings a needed break, with sunny skies and a high around 40 degrees.
Areas northwest New Jersey north of I80 and west of Route 287 have the best chance for a few inches of wet snow late Saturday. The city will likely get some slushy accumulation of an inch or so before it gets washed away by rain. There will be little if any accumulation on the coast and mainly rain.
The storm should wind down Saturday night but could finish off with snow everywhere as slightly colder air wraps into the system, which could coat the city and nearby coastal areas into New Jersey and Long Island with another inch or so. Northwest suburbs could get 2 to 4 inches on average of snow and sleet, with maybe a few spots from Sussex County into Orange County and Putnam/Dutchess counties approaching 6 inches if little or no mixing takes place.
