Man Charged With DWI for 4th Time on Long Island: Police

A Long Island man known to police was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated Thursday at Merrick, authorities said.

Joseph Jacaruso, 51, of Franklin Square, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer on Merrick Road Thursday evening, and was unable to stay in the traffic lane, police said. He almost collided with other cars on the road, police said.

It was determined that Jacaruso was drinking and was placed under arrest, police said.

He was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, failure to stay in a single lane, and unlicensed operator.

Jacaruso has three prior convictions of driving while intoxicated and one prior conviction of driving while ability impaired by alcohol, police said. He was in court earlier this week for a prior 2017 DWI charge.

He was arraigned Friday at First District Court in Hempstead. It is not known if he retained an attorney.

Bail was set at $50,000.

He is scheduled back in court July 25.
