A New Yorker who shot his ex-girlfriend in the head in a suicidal fury over their breakup has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Ramon Lalondriz-Castillo apologized Friday through a Spanish interpreter for what he called "a moment that occurred very rapidly.''
He pleaded guilty last month to attempted murder.
Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Jon Veiga says Lalondriz-Castillo accosted his former girlfriend as she left her job at a drugstore in January 2010.
Prosecutors say he fired twice at Evimer Duclerc, stopping only because the gun jammed.
Prosecutors say Lalondriz-Castillo left a suicide note in his car.
One bullet lodged in the back of Duclerc's head but didn't penetrate her skull.
She says she can finally sleep again now that Lalondriz-Castillo has been sentenced.
