Uber Driver Narrowly Escapes LIRR Train After Car Gets Stuck on Tracks

A Long Island Rail Road train bound for New York Penn Station hit an Uber driver's vehicle on the tracks near Bethpage early Tuesday, wreaking havoc on the Ronkonkoma branch for the morning commute but causing no apparent injuries.

The MTA said the 6:57 a.m. train out of Farmingdale that hit the car was due into Penn at 7:48 a.m. Ronkonkoma service was briefly suspended in both directions east of Hicksville, according to the MTA. Service was restored on one of two tracks through Bethpage as of 8:30 a.m.; authorities were working to clear the damaged vehicle. The MTA said all westbound trains were adding stops at Jamaica.

It wasn't clear how the Uber driver got stuck on the tracks, but he was able to get out in time. A company spokeswoman says Uber is aware of the situation and has reached out to the driver regarding his well-being. She said Uber would assist law enforcement as needed.

Service was restored well ahead of the evening rush. Get the latest updates from key transit sources below.
