Power Outage at LaGuardia Airport Causes Travel Woes

The outage affected one security checkpoint at the airport, a Port Authority spokesman said

A power outage caused long lines at LaGuardia Airport Saturday morning.

The outage affected one security checkpoint at the airport, Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman said in an emailed statement.

“Usually when there are no flights overnight the system is shut down and usually back up at 4:15am. Today it did not come back as usual,” Coleman said.

A video, which can be seen above, shows long security lines at terminal D around 5 a.m.

A traveler at LaGuardia said the outage impacted customers flying with Southwest Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

Southwest Airlines said in an emailed statement the power has been restored and travelers who experienced delays are now being processed through security. Spirit did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Meanwhile, the Port Authority is set to hold an unrelated drill at the airport Saturday morning.

An emergency response exercise will take place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., though officials say it will not affect any flights.
