A summer tradition is no more.
The annual July fourth fireworks show at Jones Beach has been cancelled, according to the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The cancellation was expected due to the state's budget crisis.
"This cancellation comes at a time of reduced state park resources as well as the limited availability of New York State Park Police," read a statement released by a state spokesperson.
For 15 years, the fireworks display drew tens of thousands to Jones Beach each July Fourth. In addition, boaters would line up in the waters around the beach to watch the aerial pyrotechnics that were accompanied by a simulcast of patriotic music.
Attempts to salvage this year's event apparently fizzled and state officials said they wanted to put out word about the cancellation now so that people could re-arrange their holiday plans.
