Internet Week to Be Bigger and Better This Year

Next week, the city will be a little more wired.

Techies and media companies will converge in New York City June 7-14 for the third annual Internet Week and this year is the first time the conference will have a hub for exhibits and events, boosting attendance and the conference’s prominence.

“There were [previously] a lot of smaller organizations that wanted participate that couldn’t rent larger spaces,” said David-Michel Davies, chairman of Internet Week.

This year, organizers decided to have a centralized exhibition space at the spacious Chelsea Metropolitan Pavilion. Participants will be able to peruse these exhibits for just $10.

Yahoo! will be the presenting sponsor and is hosting a free summit on Monday.

“We’ve got a great lineup of speakers, said the company’s senior Vice President of Marketing, Mollie Spilman. “We’ve pulled together decision-makers, developers and creatives in one unique conference to discuss how new innovations and technology are evolving in the digital media environment.”

Aside from the presentations, panels, educational programs, parties and arts installations throughout the city will be part of the festivities, which will be topped off with the DM Buzz Party at ARENA bar in Midtown. Last year, Internet Week attracted 15,000 participants. Davies said they expect a bigger crowd this year because there will be more events than before.

“There’s really something for everybody,” said Davies.  The week will culminate June 14 with the Annual Webby Awards, a star-studded gala honoring the Internet’s best and brightest at Cipriani Wall Street.

Companies including HP, PepsiCo, Microsoft Expression Studio, as well as business and entertainment leaders including, Roger Eber, Lisa Kudrow, Martha Stewart and AOL's Tim Armstrong will be among the hosts of the event.

The Interactive Advertising Bureau will also give a presentation on the future of interactive advertising, and the Webby Awards will honor innovative Web sites.

“Internet Week New York has quickly become an influential gathering of the world’s top thinkers in digital culture and commerce,” said Commissioner Katherine Oliver, of the New York City Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting. “This year’s festival promises to be even bigger and better thanks to the new and continued participation of our partners throughout the City, proving New York City is home to important online and new media innovation.”
