Grandma Beaten with Pipe, Responding Officers Attacked in Harlem: Cops

An emotionally disturbed man attacked his grandmother with a pipe in Harlem Wednesday morning, injuring six officers as they subdued him with pepper spray, authorities said.

Officers responding to a 8:10 a.m. call of an assault in progress at 680 St. Nicholas Ave., near 145th Street, came upon a man in his 30s attacking his grandmother, age unknown, with a metal pipe, police said. The officers arrested the man but six were injured in the process, police said

The woman was taken to Harlem Hospital in critical condition. Her grandson was also hospitalized there in stable condition.

All six officers were taken to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital. One officer was struck in the head with the pipe and was undergoing CAT scans, police said.
