Searchers hunting for remains in a remote swath of Long Island coastland found two teeth in an area near where a skull was recently recovered.
Nassau County police resumed their search on the ground Friday, days after an FBI helicopter scoured the barrier island where 10 sets of remains have been found since December.
Chopper 4 cameras showed investigators clustered in one small area, with multiple officers digging the ground with shovels and others sifting debris in large trays. Personnel from the medical examiner's officer appeared to be at the scene.
It wasn't immediately clear what led investigators to focus on such a narrow area of ground about 20 feet from the highway.
The teeth found Friday were near the spot at Tobay Beach where a skull was found on April 4. Police said at a midday news conference that the search had concluded for the day.
The ground search along Ocean Parkway took place at a stretch of desolate beach that was previously combed in the hunt for Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old missing sex worker from Jersey City.
Earlier this week, police divers returned to the water at Hemlock Cove near where Gilbert was last seen May 1. That search turned up no additional evidence in the case, police said. It was the third time police divers had searched those waters.
Ten sets of human remains have been discovered scattered across the 15-mile barrier island since late last year. Four of the sets of skeletal remains, all identified as prostitutes who posted ads on Craigslist, were found wrapped in burlap sacks in December.
The other grisly findings have been made in the last few weeks. None of those sets of remains has been publicly identified.
The search last year initially began when police were looking for Gilbert. Police say her remains have not been found.
