The Democratic governor made the remarks Tuesday in a joint statement with Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Executive Director Rick Cotton.

The Port Authority operates the New York metro area's three major airports.

The statement said the FAA should "move decisively to assure that the public's safety is protected."

In the U.S., however, the FAA and airlines continue to permit the planes to fly.
