Evacuations, Street Closures After Gas Main Break in New Jersey

A gas main break in Newark caused street closures and evacuations Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Streets were closed from 3rd Avenue and Mt. Prospect Avenue to 2nd Avenue.

The area was evacuated, including three apartment buildings and a supermarket, public safety officials said. 

Local police and firefighters are the scene, and PSE&G is assessing the situation, public safety officials said.

The gas is estimated to be turned back on after 7 p.m. Thursday, officials said.
