Garden State Plaza Mall Gunman Was Target in Drug Probe: Police

A large-scale drug sweep in northern New Jersey has yielded new information about the Teaneck man who fired shots inside a mall last fall before taking his own life.

Police in Hackensack announced on Tuesday they had arrested more than 160 suspected drug dealers in the culmination of a seven-month investigation.

One of the individuals who allegedly sold drugs to undercover officers was Richard Shoop, who fired six shots inside the Garden State Plaza in Paramus last November before committing suicide.

Hackensack Police Director Michael Mordaga says Shoop sold the drug MDMA, known as "Molly," to an undercover officer 10 days before the shooting. He says Shoop was arrested six months earlier for selling the drug.

A note found after the shooting indicated Shoop knew he was under investigation.
