Arson Investigators Probe Fire Near LIRR Station: Police

Arson investigators are looking into a fire near an Long Island Rail Road station Thursday that forced suspensions on three branches of the commuter rail line for nearly an hour, authorities say.

The fire at a building Atlantic Avenue in Garden City, near the Merillion Avenue LIRR station, was reported at about 9 p.m., according to Nassau police.

Roads were closed in the area and train service on the Port Jefferson, Ronkonkoma and Oyster Bay branches was suspended because the flames were close to the tracks.

About 100 firefighters were called to the scene to extinguish the flames. The building partially collapsed in the blaze, officials say.

Police say the cause of the fire is unknown.
