A New York City activist who founded an anti-gun violence group was shot and killed while vacationing in Miami over the weekend, police say.
Lavon "Boo" Walker of Brooklyn was shot oustide a Miami Beach cafe just before 7 a.m. Sunday, Miami Beach police said.
Walker was a founding member of Save Our Streets and "dedicated his life to working for peace and uplifting communities," according to the group's Facebook page.
Walker was struck twice by bullets near News Cafe along Eighth Street and Ocean Drive, according to police.
Witnesses told NBC Miami they heard multiple gunshots. Bystander Tavin Reiter said he and his friends immediately rushed to the victim's side, who at the time was dining at the News Cafe.
"He was groaning and he was in and out of consciousness and got a little scared like he was going to die," he said.
Walker, 30, was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he later died, police said.

In a Facebook post, Save Our Streets said: "Since 2010 Lavon was out on the streets of his beloved Crown Heights working to end gun violence and participating in street interventions and mediations. To us in the office, he was our heart. He was always smiling, cracking jokes and keeping us honest. He saw the vision for a violence-free Brooklyn."
Police in Miami say they're still looking for the suspects.
