Authorities are investigating the death of a 3-year-old girl who was found unconscious in her Bronx home Monday afternoon, and police say the girl's mother and father have been charged with assault.
Police responding to a 911 call at the home on Manhattan College Parkway in Van Cortlandt Village found the little girl unresponsive shortly before 4 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.
The medical examiner who conducted the autopsy on the girl found bruising all over the girl's body, according to a law enforcement official. There was also some internal bruising that may have contributed to her death.
The mother and father made statements to police and prosecutors admitting they hit the girl because she refused to do her lessons, the law enforcement official said.
The parents have no prior record with the Administration for Children's Services, the official said. Each has been arrested in the past for minor offenses.
The autopsy on the girl was inconclusive pending further study.
