Woman Jailed for Stuffing Abused Poodle in Suitcase

The animal died a day after being rescued

New York City woman who stuffed her injured poodle into a suitcase and tossed it in the garbage has pleaded guilty to aggravated attempted cruelty to animals, prosecutors said.

Sonia Perez was sentenced to 30 days in jail and three years' probation after pleading guilty Monday.

Perez, 21 put the suitcase in a trash can on March 3, Queens prosecutors said. A passer-by heard noise coming from the can and found the 9-year-old dog lying in its feces, limp and freezing.

It had broken ribs and died the next day.

"The defendant showed a complete disregard for the life of a helpless and severely injured animal," District Attorney Richard Brown said. "Instead of getting help, the defendant unceremoniously tossed the dog into the trash like rubbage to either die a slow death or be crushed by a sanitation truck’s compactor."

Perez told police it was too hard to take care of a dog and a child. Her lawyer's name wasn't immediately available.

She must also reimburse the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for the dog's medical care.
