Bronx Zoo Breaks World Record for Largest Origami Display

A massive display of 204,481 colorful origami elephants at the Bronx Zoo has set a new world record.

On November 17th, the masterpiece beat out the previous record set in 2014 by a zoo in Great Britain, which displayed 33,764 origami elephants, according to the officials with the Guinness World Record.

The award winning display is part of the Wildlife Conservation Society's 96 Elephants campaign, which raises awareness of the number of elephants poached in Africa each year for the ivory trade.

Many contributed to the display including a 109-year-old woman, students from a school of the deaf, as well as people from Iran, Kazakhstan and Egypt, Guinness officials said. Pieces also came from all 50 states.

Due to its size, the whole masterpiece isn’t open for viewing. However, 78,564 origami elephants are on display at Bronx Zoo between Dec. 1 to Dec. 31.
