Burst Water Main Spills 2,000 Gallons of Water a Minute Onto New Jersey Highway

Several businesses in New Jersey were without water part of the day Monday after a 16-inch water main burst, spewing 2,000 gallons of water a minute onto the highway at one point.

Crews worked to cap the leak along Route 22 in Watchung throughout the morning as others armed with salting equipment fought the ice.

Residential areas were not affected, but businesses between Mountain Avenue and Terrell Road had no water for much of the morning.

The cause of the break is under investigation.
