Wanted Serb Released From Jail

A Serbian student wanted in upstate New York for allegedly assaulting a college student was released today from a prison in his native Serbia.

The Belgrade District Court said in a statement that there's no danger that 22-year-old Miladin Kovacevic will try to escape.

Kovacevic was detained in October as the authorities here launched an investigation into the case against him in Binghamton, where he allegedly beat up a fellow college student at a bar last may.

The former basketball player at Binghamton University is accused of brutally beating Bryan Steinhauer of Brooklyn. Kovacevic fled to Serbia in June to avoid prosecution.

Serbia has refused to hand over Kovacevic to the U.S. to face a trial, citing its laws that ban extradition.

The issue has strained relations between Washington and Belgrade.
