Police Probe Virgin Islands Death of Late Painter's Daughter from Hamptons

Authorities in the U.S. Virgin Islands are investigating the death of the daughter of the late artist Willem de Kooning.

Johanna Liesbeth de Kooning, 56, died at her home on the island of St. John. She also lived in East Hampton.

Virgin Islands police spokeswoman Melody Rames said Tuesday the major crimes division is investigating the death. A medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

An unidentified male who was at Kooning's home told police she collapsed around 2:30 a.m. Friday and had been drinking wine. She had no vital signs when Paramedics arrived.

Kooning was the only child of the abstract-expressionist artist.
