Violet, Star of NYC Hawk Cam, Dies After Surgery

The hawk died after suffering heart-related complications from surgery

A red-tailed hawk that starred in a live-streaming New York City webcam has died after surgery to amputate her badly injured foot.

The New York Times reports that the hawk, named Violet, died Thursday after suffering heart-related complications from surgery. She was believed to be about 5 years old.

Violet and her mate Bobby built a nest last winter on a ledge outside the office of New York University President John Sexton.

The Times set up a webcam on the nest, and their one chick hatched on Mother's Day.

But Violet's leg was severely injured. The Times says it may have become entangled in a fishing line. A metal wildlife band made things worse.

Long Island-based raptor rehabilitators Robert and Cathy Horvath captured Violet for treatment last Saturday.
