State Cracks Down on Truck, Bus Pollution

New York is launching a statewide program to crack down on truckers and bus drivers who violate laws intended to reduce health problems from diesel fumes.

State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Pete Grannis says the initiative is based on a successful pilot program in New York City. It will focus on urban neighborhoods that have been most seriously affected by air pollution from heavy truck traffic.

Along with vehicle air emissions regulations, New York and most other states have laws limiting the amount of time diesel trucks and buses can sit and idle. The enforcement will include pulling over trucks spewing plumes of visible exhaust as well as those violating idling rules.
