Son, Passersby Save Woman From Burning Car on Long Island

An 18-year-old man saved his mother from their burning car on Long Island Wednesday with the help of some people who happened to be driving by as the car burst into flames, officials said.

The 50-year-old woman apparently suffered a medical emergency on Cold Spring Hills Road in West Hills and her white Subaru spun out of control and hit a tree around 11:44 a.m.

The woman's son got out of the car and managed to help her most of the way out, but her feet were still inside as a fire started, according to one witness.

"I pulled over and a couple of us were able to move her away from the car," Bob Harrington, of Huntington Village, said. "Just a few minutes later the car was pretty much engulfed."

Video shows firefighters spraying the car with water as flames and sparks erupt out of the front of it.

The woman and her son were transported to Huntington Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
