One Shot When Off-Duty Corrections Officer Fires Gun in New Jersey: Prosecutors

One person was wounded when an off-duty Essex County corrections officer fired his weapon in Irvington early Friday, prosecutors say.

Details on the person shot on Myrtle Avenue around 2:30 a.m. weren't immediately clear, but the person is expected to survive.

A neighgbor said it appears the suspect may have been trying to carjack the off-duty officer, and the officer pulled out his gun and fired on Myrtle Avenue at about 2:30 a.m.

"I heard gunshots, when I looked out my window, the guy was laying on the ground," said neighbor Jose Lalindes. "The guy ordered him to toss away the gun -- all of a sudden when the guy had a chance, he ran off."

Irvington police chased the man, who sped away in a green Ford Explorer. The SUV came to a stop about a mile away on Springfield Avenue.

The man was then taken to the hospital while investigators collected evidence. He is in stable condition, officials say. It's not clear whether the off-duty officer will face charges.
