Schumer Not Afraid of Gitmo Goons

"We have had terrorists housed in New York before," says senior senator

Unlike most of his colleagues, Sen. Chuck Schumer isn't scared by the prospect of hosting a few punk terror suspects.

"Bottom line is we have had terrorists (incarcerated) in New York before,” Schumer said at a news conference yesterday. “They’ve been housed safely."

Schumer's stance is refreshingly sane in sharp contrast to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who made a fool of himself  discussing the issue earlier in the week.

At one point Reid seemed to suggest that transferring a terror suspect from a prisoner transport vehicle to a new facility constituted "releasing" him:

REID: I’m saying that the United States Senate, Democrats and Republicans, do not want terrorists to be released in the United States. That’s very clear.

QUESTION: No one’s talking about releasing them. We’re talking about putting them in prison somewhere in the United States.

REID: Can’t put them in prison unless you release them.

Schumer's stance echoed the sentiments of President Obama's address yesterday morning.

"Nobody has ever escaped from one of our federal, supermax prisons, which hold hundreds of convicted terrorists," said Obama. " As Republican Lindsey Graham said, the idea that we cannot find a place to securely house 250-plus detainees within the United States is not rational."

And the recent vintage of terrorist has shown that New York's Finest is up to the task of protecting us from the bad guys.

"The main concern is bringing these terrorists to justice and making sure the public is safe," Schumer added. "I have faith that the administration will do both."
