Official Pushes Grading System for NYC Nail Salons

The Bronx borough president wants New York City nail salons to be graded on cleanliness, safety, ventilation and other issues.

Ruben Diaz Jr. told the Daily News Saturday the letter-grading system will give customers of the city's 2,000 licensed nail salons more comfort.

The proposal comes in the wake of a report by the city's public advocate that called for more inspections of the establishments. Letitia James found that there are only 27 safety inspectors in the entire state for nail salons.

James says some of the chemicals used in nail salons have been linked to reproductive and respiratory problems.

Diaz says legislation establishing a letter-grading system will be introduced to the City Council. It also calls for a customer's bill of rights.
