Cop Hurt in NJ Hit-Run, Suspect at Large

A police officer in Rochelle Park, N.J. was struck in a hit-and-run as he went to investigate a harassment case, authorities say.

The officer, Christopher Rios, was following up on a complaint lodged against 62-year-old Lawrence Nelson at his home on the 100-block of Madison Avenue at about 3 p.m., police said. Nelson pulled up in his driveway, and when Rios attempted to speak with him, quickly reversed and then shifted into drive and sped away.

The officer was thrown about 75 feet into the street from the impact, police said.

Rios was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for injuries to the knee and released.

Police are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information on Nelson is asked to contact Det. Jim DePreta at 201-843-1515. Nelson is driving a black 2008 Toyota Avalon with a New Jersey license plate Z82-AFK.
