TSA Fires 3, Suspends 23 at Newark Airport

Federal security officials have announced the results of disciplinary proceedings against more than three dozen baggage screeners at Newark Liberty International Airport accused of not following procedures.

Three screeners have been fired and 17 who were targeted for firing have been suspended. Four screeners had suspensions upheld and two more had suspensions reduced. One case is pending.

Last October, the TSA sought to fire 25 screeners and suspend 19 more. Before the recent proceedings, one screener had been fired, one resigned, nine were suspended and six were cleared of wrongdoing.

The Transportation Security Administration investigated screeners last year after surveillance cameras were installed in one of the airport's 25 screening rooms in late 2011 to check for possible thefts.
