Amtrak Service Set to Resume Monday as Travelers Continue to Scramble for Ways Home

Trains are set to begin running Monday on the stretch of railroad where an Amtrak derailed Tuesday, killing 8 and injuring more than 200 others, days after the wreck shut down a critical section of the nation's busiest rail corridor and left thousands of travelers in the lurch.

Amtrak said Thursday that at least limited service on the Northeast Corridor was expected to be restored by Monday, with full service returning no later than Tuesday.

Service has been completely shut down along the busy corridor since the derailment, and the railroad had cautioned service elsewhere in the region would have to be modified. Most commuter railroads in the Northeast were operating normally, although many lacked the usual Amtrak connections.

Amtrak service north of New York City has been restored, with service between Boston and New York to operate as scheduled beginning Friday.

Tuesday's derailment choked the Northeast Corridor, which carries more than 750,000 passengers a day between eight states and Washington D.C., on Amtrak and eight commuter rail lines.

Some 2,200 trains a day normally use the Northeast Corridor, according to the railroad's Infrastructure Operations and Advisory Commission.

Amtrak said it alone carried 11.6 million passengers through the Northeast Corridor in fiscal year 2014, its highest ridership year yet.

NJ Transit, Greyhound and Megabus were honoring Amtrak tickets. Greyhound said it added 16 more scheduled trips between New York, Philadelphia and Washington. It says that it will cross-honor Amtrak tickets until Amtrak service resumes on Monday.

Megabus said it was working to add trips on Wednesday and accommodate an increased demand in coming days. BoltBus also announced additional service during the outage.

Several airlines have also responded to the rail outage. Delta said it was considering offering additional flights in the affected areas or switching to large jets between Washington and New York. American Airlines, which flies shuttles between the two cities, added at least two roundtrip shuttles between the nation's capital and the Big Apple.

Passengers can check Amtrak schedules online or by calling 800-USA-RAIL.
