A gas station attendant was smoking a cigarette early Sunday morning when he was shot multiple times in an apparent drive-by, according to witnesses.
The 60-year-old victim was outside the BP gas station on Route 27 in South Brunswick around 4:20 a.m. when the white car pulled up and someone inside it fired on him, police said.
Murali Yerrabelly, a coworker, showed up to work about an hour after the shooting. He said two people were working at the gas station at the time — one man was in the station and the victim was outside.
Yerrabelly says as many as three rounds were fired at the attendant, who was hit multiple times, according to police.
Hours later, blood still stained the spot where the man was shot.
Police said it may have been an attempted robbery, but coworkers of the man say the men in the car were not trying to rob him and that no money was taken.
"He stopped the car, just fired, that's it. Three rounds he fired," Yerrabelly said, adding that he believes his coworker was shot in the hip, shoulder and leg.

The victim was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he underwent surgery and was listed in serious condition.
No other injuries were reported.
The cameras at the station were not working at the time of the shooting, and police are asking for information from anyone nearby who may have witnessed it.
It's unclear how many suspects police are looking for.
